Who Says Outdoor Grilling Has To be Over When Cold Weather Sets In?

Outdoor kitchens can be used year round and range from a safe area to operate a grill to complete kitchens with refrigeration, cabinets, granite counter tops and grills with accessories such as burners and warming drawers.

Buckeye Landscape has the expertise to install whatever outdoor living spaces you'd like. Call us to set up an appointment that includes ideas, estimated costs and scheduling to start work as soon as the weather permits. Get on the schedule early, out time fills up fast!

Meanwhile, here are a few ideas for making the most of your grill in the cold weather.

Use your grill in a wind-protected area (wind reduces your grill's efficiency) that is well ventilated. Never install a grill in a porch overhang or other enclosed area. This will reduce any fire hazard and prevent the build up of carbon monoxide.

Clear any accumulated snow or ice off grill. Check all lines and connections for leaks. In cold weather, parts can become brittle or cracked. Make sure the control knobs are not frozen and turn freely.

Preheat your grill for a minimum of 20 minutes.

Line charcoal grills with heavy duty aluminum foil, shiny side up, to help retain and reflect heat; poke holes through the foil to correspond to the bottom vents.

Have plenty of extra fuel on hand. When charcoal grilling, I like to have a second kettle grill for lighting and holding live coals. Or have extra chimney starters at the ready on a heat-proof surface. (Not on your wooden deck!) Add coals every half hour or as needed.

Heat escapes rapidly each time the grill lid is lifted. Resist the urge to "peek". A digital temperature probe can keep you apprised of what's going on under the lid. Some charcoal grills come equipped with a built-in thermometer--very useful in the winter.

Allow extra time. Food will take longer to cook in cold weather--anywhere from 30 - 100% longer.

Remember, winter days are short. If lighting around the grill is dim, supplement with a clip-on light or install one of many types of low-voltage lighting (another item we can design and install for you).

Save the slow-cooked items for friendlier grilling conditions. Select foods that can be cooked quickly--30 minutes or less--over direct heat. Steaks, chops, burgers, chicken breasts, shrimp, fish steaks, filets, or kebobs are all good bets.

WARNING: Reports state that people unthinkingly touch hot surfaces when they themselves are cold. Pay attention to what you are doing. Don't touch your hot grill without grilling gloves or other protection.

Happy grilling from the Grill and Landscape Master!
