Hold the Salt!

In Ohio we apply de-icing materials not only to our roads, but also to our sidewalks and driveways. As salt dissolves it can spread to adjacent soil and be taken up by plant roots. Plants vary in their sensitivity to salt: from no damage along a continuum to being killed.

So, when possible consider non-sodium de-icing materials such as calcium chloride or calcium magnesium acetate (a salt-free melting agent made from limestone and acetic acid.) These products are available at most home improvement stores.

Use de-icing materials sparingly on sidewalks or other areas near grass and foundation shrubs such as Taxus and Boxwood. These varieties are easily damaged, especially if salt comes in contact with the foliage.

Keep in mind that snow covered branches will be less affected than branches directly exposed to de-icing materials.

We can help you determine if your plants are suffering from salt damage and recommend ways to reduce or eliminate future damage.
